AHAHAHAHA! You didn’t really think that happened, did you? This is AMERICA! Land of “affluenza!” Rich white people don’t get in trouble! I mean, Wall St. executives literally stole billions of dollars and not one of them was so much as yelled at by law enforcement. Did you really expect this story to end differently?
The daughter of a wealthy tech CEO who owns a mansion in Southampton will avoid jail after admitting to stealing $1,644 worth of clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue. Kate Meckler, who is described by the NY Post as one of New York’s top real estate brokers, was arrested in April for grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property after Saks security caught her pulling “a top, a pair of jeans and a jacket from a rack” and stuffing it in her handbag. … Meckler, 39, reached a deal with the Manhattan DA, pleading guilty yesterday to disorderly conduct. As part of the plea deal, she will serve five days of community service at an area soup kitchen.
Five days of community service. I did more than that as part of a civics class in high school. This is not a punishment, it’s a minor inconvenience. Keep in mind, $1600 makes this a felony. In fact, this exact situation is brought up when googling “grand larceny”:
…it matters not they nature or type of property. Furthermore, whether the theft was a result of a trick or Embezzlement also makes no difference. Although Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree often involves a variety of different types of property stolen through equally diverse means, a common charging of NY PL 155.30 is seen in felony shoplifting arrests. This occurs where an individual steals expensive clothing from Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue or other high end department stores.
I’ll bet what little money I have that Meckler doesn’t understand why she couldn’t just pay for the clothes she stole and make this whole thing go away. It was just a little joke! It’s not like she needed to steal anything! She was just having a little fun! Why is she being treated like a common criminal?!
When the riots come and the rich are dragged screaming from their ivory towers, I guarantee they will have absolutely no idea why. They’ve built themselves an entirely parallel universe where they can do whatever the hell they want, up to and including breaking the law with no fear of punishment.
