Oooohhh look! More liberal propaganda! You’re lying like all political commentators do! Shame on you, Filthy Liberal Scum!
You’re totally right! I AM lying through my teeth about Republicans wanting to cut Social Security! Why, if that WERE true, you’d expect one of their senior members in Congress to say something like this:
I’m not going to raise the debt ceiling unless we get serious about keeping the country from becoming Greece, saving Social Security and Medicare [sic]. So here’s what i would like: meaningful entitlement reform — not to turn Social Security into private accounts, not to take a voucher approach to Medicare — but, adjust the age for Social Security, CPI changes and means testing and look beyond the ten-year window. I cannot in good conscience raise the debt ceiling without addressing the long term debt problems of this country and I will not.
Adjust the age? That means people would have to work longer before they could retire! That’s the definition of cutting Social Security. CPI changes? That’s immediate cuts for current beneficiaries and compounded loss over time. Means testing? Sure, give less to the people who earn more and, lo and behold, suddenly they’re not so interested in keeping Social Security around anymore. Just give Fox News a few years of blathering how their money is going to lazy poor people.
So, yes. The GOP is looking to hold Social Security cuts hostage in the upcoming debt ceiling “crisis” that the GOP has announced it will create. Remember, the GOP happily raised the debt ceiling for Bush 7 times while he was spending like a drunken sailor, but now? Well, it’s just outrageous to suggest that we continue to pay our obligations under a Democratic president! Republicans DEMAND cuts to the safety net to continue doing what they did for 8 years without a qualm!
And just a quick reminder, Social Security does not contribute to the deficit in the standard sense. The massive trust fund that was built up has been raided and now we have to pay it back. THAT adds to the deficit but tough shit. Congress “borrowed” the money, now Congress can find ways to pay it back without cutting benefits. To do otherwise would be like you borrowing money from me and when I demanded it back 20 years later to pay my mortgage, you telling me that I’ll just have to sell my house, eat cat food and that I should have planned better.
This is applicable to any religion that claims to have an omnipotent and omniscient deity. My personal favorite aspect of this is the fact that religious leaders like the Pope condemn homosexuals for being what God made them. This is why they deny every scrape of science that says otherwise. They have to. And when they finally do get around to accepting gays, they’ll just “forget” in a few years things like the “Pope Benedict XVI has given his blessing to Rebecca Kadaga, Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, who has promised to pass the country’s notorious anti-gay “kill the gays” bill as a “Christmas gift” to the Ugandan people.”(Source)
OK! Here are the top six contenders for “Douchebag Of The Year!” It would have been five but Rush Limbaugh and Paul Ryan tied. Select who YOU want to see rewarded on January 2 with a special sneak preview on this Monday’s podcast!
Well thanks a lot, House GOP! Not content with pushing the country off the fiscal cliff (that’s really a gentle curve), they’ve also couldn’t be bothered passing a new farm bill. The result? The price of milk roughly doubles to $8 a gallon.
I have a question for John Schanatter, CEO of Papa John’s Pizza: You whined like a little bitch about having to shell out a few extra pennies per pizza to provide healthcare HEALTHCARE! for your workers because God FORBID you make life better for the people that made you a millionaire. My question is: Where’s all your outrage now? Without cheese, you’re out of business. The Senate passed a bipartisan bill so, as much as you may want to, you cannot blame the Democrats and Obama. Are you going to make public pronouncements against the GOP? They’re going to hurt your business far more than your imaginary Obamacare burden. I suspect you won’t. How curious.
Here’s a clip from the Ed Show explaining the particulars:
At this moment in time, there’s a temporary extension in the works to hopefully be put in to place by Monday’s deadline but nothing is finalized yet. If they blow the deadline, it’s going to take a few weeks to hash out properly and up goes the price.
The GOOD news is that 2%, 1% and skim milk can be frozen (whole milk separates too much), so stock up on a few extra gallons if you have the room. Just make sure you pour out a few inches first so the container doesn’t burst.
In a decision that will, no doubt, set the right wing’s hair on fire, the Supreme Court has turned down the request from Hobby Lobby to immediately impose its religious morals on its employees. Via ThinkProgress:
The Supreme Court said Wednesday it will not block an Obamacare mandate that employers must provide insurance coverage for contraception. Hobby Lobby, a craft chain, was seeking an emergency injunction against the mandate after both a federal and district judge ruled against it. While Hobby Lobby can still pursue its lawsuit that claims the mandate violates religious freedom, Justice Sonia Sotomayor ruled that it could not show that an injunction blocking the mandate from taking effect was “necessary or appropriate.”
I don’t see this ultimately going the way the Christian right wants it to go. Their reasoning is EXTREMELY flimsy and would open employees to levels of discrimination that are simply unacceptable in the United States. Well, unacceptable to everyone but Republicans and corporations at any rate…
If you don’t already know, former president, George H.W. Bush, is not doing well and there is a distinct possibly he will die soon from respiratory failure. Whatever your feelings about him, the man was smart enough to invade Iraq for legitimate reasons and then leave rather than get us stuck there for years (that stupidity would be up to his son). He also broke a major campaign promise by raising taxes and paid the price for it. Why? Because it was necessary for the well being of the country and he put country before ideology. Hell, Bush coined the phrase “Voodoo Economics” to describe the outrageous lie that was Reaganomics.
So here’s the test: If Bush dies now or in the next four years, Obama, as current president, will make a public statement about it. My contention is that, no matter what Obama says, no matter how much praise he heaps upon Bush, no matter how dignified and classy the statement is, the right will go into a frenzy. They will find insult in every other syllable. They will be outraged, OUTRAGED I say!, at the “disrespect” Obama had for a Republican hero. Fox will devote days to the “scandal” and Rush Limbaugh will be absolutely shocked that anyone could be so petty as to use the death of a former president to attack conservatism.
If this comes to pass, I will forevermore point to this as indisputable proof that the right wing of this country is manifestly incapable of acting like adults and should be treated like the spoiled little children they are.
I would love love LOVE to be wrong but I guess we’ll find out if Poppy Bush passes.
CEO Howard Schultz is asking Baristas in Starbucks Washington, D.C. locations to write the words“Come Together” on cups through December 28th. Schultz is hoping that this will send a message to lawmakers that the American public is paying attention to the looming “fiscal cliff.”
“Come Together?” Wow. How neutral. It’s almost like they’re telling two intransigent sides to compromise. But I’m confused: Who are these two sides? Schultz can’t possibly mean the Democratic Party and the GOP. That would suggest that neither party has moved an inch. Anyone with two working brain cells knows this is not the case. Obama and the Democrats have compromised a whole lot in the last four years while the GOP had to be tricked over and over into actually governing. Fortunately the GOP has experienced phenomenal brain drain so this keeps working.
Clearly, suggesting that “both sides” need to work together is an incredible insult to Obama. After all, he and his party just won a historic victory and the GOP’s response has been to refuse to give an inch on anything. That’s not how it works. When you win an election, you can be generous. When you lose, you take what you can get. Telling both sides they have to compromise when the Democrats already have is only enabling the GOP to continue acting like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum.
The 2012 election was supposed to be a wake up call to the right that they can’t have everything they want. They didn’t get the message. Shrugging our shoulders and sighing, “Oh well! The Dems will just have to compromise even more” is not realistic. That way lies the total breakdown of government as long as the GOP is in the minority. It may hurt in the short run but Republicans have to be held accountable for their behavior. We need to repeat, ad nauseum, to the public who exactly is bringing the country to a grinding stand still. If they can’t learn to govern responsibly, they need to pay for it at the polls.
So, Starbucks, keep your little slogans of false equivalence to yourself. You’re not helping, you’re giving the GOP exactly what they want: A grande mocha obstruction with a shot of denial.
