15 Year Old Commits Suicide: A Perfect Example Of Slut Shaming

This is Felicia Garcia. Felicia had sex with four older football players. There is no indication that it was coerced in any way. She did not claim she was raped or assaulted. She was, however, harassed about it when two of the players talked about it and were recorded. The bullying led her to commit suicide by falling backwards into an oncoming train.
As tragic as this is, it highlights a larger problem in our culture. Imagine, for a moment, that Felicia had been a 15 year old boy that had slept with 4 older female athletes, cheerleaders, basketball, what have you. And then imagine the story had gotten out. Would “he” have been teased? Or would he have been immortalized?
Do you see the problem?
Yes, 15 is a bit young to have engaged in a five way but her age is almost irrelevant in terms of the reaction to her sex life. The only difference is that she would have been more capable of handling the bullying had she been older. The disapproval and stigma would have been the same.
There were other reasons she was bullied: for repeatedly running away from home, having piercings and living in foster homes but the final straw seems to have been the harassment stemming from the encounter with the 4 boys.
We, as a country continue to treat sex as something dirty. We treat sexually active men as heroes (unless they’re gay, of course) and sexually active women as whores. This twisted thinking infects every aspect of our lives (certainly reflected in our schools whether we choose to believe kids have sex or not) and is a large contributor to rape culture, in which we blame women for being attacked. After all, they’re just sluts that were asking for it.
Felicia was a disturbed young woman who deserved better than to be shamed for being sexually active and in a country less prurient and childish than ours, she wouldn’t have been.
I agree that this young lady was to young to be having sex with 4 older boys but the matter stands that no child should have to die for a mistake. Thats why there kids. Its a time in life where they are trying to figure out who they are. Trying to face the growing pains of moving from being a child into becoming a young adult. I hope and pray that she has found peace and that the quilt that these boys must feel will teach them all a valuable lesson but not ruin 4 more lives because of a tragic mistake. RIP forever

Who was responsible for her committing suicide? You cant seriously think that the boys she had sex with are responsible. Of course they talked about it. Thats what teenage boys do. This is a tragic event, but blaming the boys isnt the answer.

Women are not men, and men are not women. Why must an equal counterpart of the stigma exist for the claim to be considered as “true”.
If sluts are women are happen to be promiscuous, and if this girl was promiscuous, then via transitive property this girl was in fact, a slut.

She was, by definition, a slut. It does not matter how self righteous you get or how out dated the term is, it is still a fact. While people like you continue to bang your collective heads against the wall the problem will continue. We all, even people who cannot understand plain English, need to stop arguing about the grammar and start supporting those in need.

I’m not saying that it was RIGHT to bully her over this. My argument is that we should stop focusing whether or not she was a slut, and focus more on the fact that no one should care/insult her over being one. By definition, she is a slut; I’m suggesting that we should stop associating such negative connotations with the word “slut” and with sexually active women in general.
When you say something like “she isn’t a slut”, you’re validating the stigma that comes with the word. What if she WAS a slut? What if she WAS promiscuous, would she then have deserved what she got?

It is a shame this girl did not have someone to stand up for her. I am 60 years old and became friends with a new transfer student while I was in high school. She was is what many of you would have called a slut. The only reason I knew this was because of course the boys at school had to tell me. I had known this boys for years. They told me if I continued to be her friend, that I would be considered a slut too. I told them to go ahead and think that because I knew better and so did they. That I did not care what they called me or thought of me. She was my friend no matter what and they could go screw themselves. Well I was not labelled a slut and she was no longer called that because they knew I would find out and shame them publicly right back. She moved in my senior year but I heard from her years later. She thanked me for being her friend. She had a terrible home life (I knew that from first hand knowledge) and I had literally saved her life. I did not know this. All I knew is when I met her she was a very sweet soul and very funny and I wanted her to be my friend and she was a good friend. When I became a mother, I raised my daughter to accept people for who they are and not to judge. That we do not walk in other peoples shoes and do not know how we would act in that same situation. And that you defend you friends. This girl needed a friend who would have stood by here and helped her through this.
