A Study In Ironic Stupidity

This is not political but I couldn’t help but take note of this:

Ervin McKinness, a 21-year-old aspiring rapper, tweeted about driving drunk at 120 mph minutes before dying in a fiery one-car crash that killed the rapper and four others.

Here’s his last tweet:

Drunk af going 120 drifting corners  YOLO

One of the things I despise about rap is that it glorifies stupid and shitty behavior. The United States spends billions a year waging an idiotic war on drugs and has a looooong history of institutionalized racism. Rap’s response? Popularize smoking pot. Because sending thousands of young black men to jail for a joint is so worth it to be cool! There’s a serious problem in our country of objectifying women and treating them like like whores. Rap’s response? Call women hos and bitches. Because nothing says “I’m a man!” like denigrating 50% of the population.

This is not the first time I’ve heard a rapper go on about how awesome driving drunk is and I can’t say I’m sorry one managed to kill himself doing it. Especially since he didn’t take out any bystanders other than his similarly stupid friends. Maybe it will occur to the rest of these idiots that driving into a wall and dying isn’t “gangsta,” it’s just a pointless waste. Does that sound callous to you? Maybe the next aspiring rapper to YOLO at 140mph will take out a couple of kids. I’m sure the tribute song will be a chart topper and will totally comfort the parents.

As much as I’m not a fan of most rap music these days for a lot of these reasons, it’s also the reason why most rock is shit too. Be careful not to single out the “urban” genre when the same problems can be seen across the musical spectrum.
