The Fat Smug Bastard and I have a disagreement about Ann Romney. He thinks she has as much impact as Michelle Obama. I think he is certifiably insane. Glenn isn’t an Ann fan by any means but he feels that she commands the same kind of admiration.

Madness! Ann fires up the base because she’s rich, white and relatively pretty; more or less the defining traits that the conservative base looks for. Her attempts at selling herself as “one of the struggling masses” fell short. After all, how many of us “struggled” in the beginning by relying on several hundred thousand dollars in stocks? How many of us were born with the connections that Mitt inherited by having the last name “Romney?”

Let’s be clear, I don’t begrudge anyone starting off life with everything already in place to make you a zillionaire but don’t insult me by pretending you’ve lived the same life as me. I grew up on government cheese, jeans with patches and not a lot of money. Ann Romney doesn’t know what struggling is like. And guess what? As not rich as my family was, I still have no idea what it’s like to really struggle. I’ve never had to choose between food and the electric bill. The only time as a child I can recall my family having money problems was an entire week when the only thing we could afford to make for dinner was cabbage soup and grilled cheese. So even though I was “poor,” I’ve never dealt with real poverty and would never dare to presume to know what it’s like. Ann Romney’s speech was so contrived it was painful to watch (I caught it later, I couldn’t watch the RNC live)

Michelle Obama, on the other hand, comes off as far more authentic. Can you imagine Ann Romney dropping to the ground to do a push up? Or letting an Olympic athlete pick her up in a bear hug? Me neither. I have a feeling Michelle’s speech is going to blow Ann’s canned recitation out of the water. She has a stage presence and approachability (is that even a word?) that Ann is just lacking.

And then I will mock Glenn.
