In case you thought I was insane whenever I harp on the “both sides” meme in which the worst of the left is somehow equivalent to the worst of the right and no matter what the right does, it’s OK because surely someone on the left some time, some where must have done something just as bad, here’s a reminder that I’m actually quite sane.

So let’s recap: Bachmann goes on an insane witch hunt with zero proof. No one in the media blinks. Mitt Romney provably lies with every other sentence. No one in the media blinks. Several GOPpers have repeatedly questioned President Obama’s place of birth with zero proof. No one in the media blinks. Fox is trying, again, to gin up a controversy about Obama’s college records with zero proof. No one in the media blinks.

Harry Reid makes the perfectly plausible claim that Mitt Romney, uber millionaire, paid no taxes for a decade with zero proof.

EVERYONE FREAK OUT THAT A POLITICIAN MADE A UNSUBSTANTIATED CLAIM!

The mainstream media is raking Reid over the coals for making a claim without solid proof. Because, you know, that’s the standard they hold everyone to. Well, at least everyone in the Democratic Party. Can’t you just taste the liberal media bias?

There’s two reasons for this: one they mention in the clip above; the media doesn’t know what to do with liberals or Democrats when they come out strong. It screws up their narrative that we’re weak and soft. Republicans are tough, Democrats are wusses. Why do you think Anthony Weiner was slammed so hard by the “liberal” media but Republican after Republican get a pass for far worse behavior? Weiner was loud and aggressive. He broke the narrative and was punished when the opportunity arose.

The second reason is that the tax return controversy is hurting Romney and it’s hurting him badly. His base is already unenthusiastic; if this keeps up, they’ll become actively hostile. This means the horse race becomes boring. Obama’s lead will continue to grow until it becomes insurmountable and that means less drama to report on. The media could focus on the Senate and House races but those only have a regional appeal for the most part. A foregone conclusion in the presidential race means bad ratings.

If the tax return controversy doesn’t go away soon, watch for a “sudden” Obama scandal that magically seems to suck all the air out of the room. Gotta keep that horse race going!
