Good luck with that, though. You’re gonna need it conservatives!

Jeff Bezos, founder of the online superstore Amazon.com as well as the aerospace company Blue Origin, and his wife MacKenzie have pledged to donate $2.5 million to give Washington State’s same sex marriage referendum a fighting chance in November’s election. The size of the donation puts them firmly in the ranks of the largest financial backers of gay marriage in the nation.

It occurred to me as a I was listening to a libertarian whine about how the left is “censoring” Chick-fil-A, that there’s a reason the right hates boycotts: They’re not very good at them and they tend to backfire. Think of how badly the “Million Mom” boycott of JCPenney went. This is directly attributable to the success of the politically correct movement of the 90′s.When the left boycotts, it’s in the pursuit of an end to some kind of discrimination, pollution, corruption, etc. Even people who are not particularly political can support that. And it usually works. We got Beck off the air, Rush lost dozens of advertisers and millions of dollars and so on. When the right boycotts, on the other hand, it’s almost always in favor of some kind of discrimination or bigotry. No one wants to be seen visibly supporting that except for a minority of haters. This is why the right keeps trying to make believe it’s about “religious freedom” but no one is really buying that bullshit.

Therefor, Fox News and the rest of the right wing media hate, hate, hate boycotts! They’re unamerican! They’re censorship! They’re tyranny!

Unless, of course, a right wing group is doing it. Then it’s patriotic and as American as mom’s heterosexual apple pie.
