For My Conservative Friend: You’re Asking The Wrong Question.
on June 20, 2012 at 4:12 pmThe last time my conservative friend, codenamed “Glasses,” was over we got into a heated discussion about unions. The Fat Smug Bastard and THE Mike Murphy were there as well. Keep in mind, Glasses is a Fox News kind of Republican. He’s very sure of his opinions but cannot articulate why. For instance, during the 2008 election, he was very sure he did not like Obama. He thought he was, I believe his exact word was “smarmy.” Curious, I asked why he would say such a thing. “I don’t know.” “You don’t know?” “No.” “Can you name one thing he has said or done to give you that impression?” “No.” “So you have a strong opinion but have no idea why you have that opinion?” “Yeah, I guess so.” “Congratulations. You’re the perfect conservative.”
Did I mention Glasses is also gay? But he still supports Republicans. The same people that tell him he is an abomination and should be sent to concentration camps.
Anyway, Glasses was arguing that public union workers are greedy and said, I kid you not, “Why should public sector jobs be better than private sector jobs?”
I almost fell out of my chair. What Glasses and the rest of the “public sector workers are greedy!” crowd fails to realize is that public sector jobs didn’t magically become better than private sector jobs, private sector jobs got worse. Pensions, health care, vacation and sick time, decent pay and job security are all hallmarks of government jobs that conservatives tell us we should resent. The private sector doesn’t have that so why should the public sector? What they “forget” is that the private sector used to have that, too. Sixty years ago, you could get a job, work in the same company for decades, make a solid wage and retire on a good pension. But then corporations and Wall St. got greedy and this was the result:
A better question for Glasses to ask would be: “Why aren’t private sector jobs as good as they used to be and who benefits from them being worse?”
Think he’ll find the answer on Fox?

The reason he said “smarmy” is because it was 2008. In 2008, everything was smarmy.
HAH!
I have to share this with you Justin, I posted your image on my facebook page and this was the response I got:
You cant blame Obama on this. The president can only suggest resolve. Congress makes and psses laws. Presidents dont stand a chance when they inherit bad economic problems. The trickle down theory always exist. It takes a second term to increase your chances to fulfill your promises. You must clean up the mess. Wage war and not increase taxes is a death sentnce to our economy. Why? That money has to take away from something…
Nice response.
Justin reminds me of the well-meaning children who ask “why don’t we just give poor people each a million dollars?”
