Take Your Republican Party Back, Please!on April 8, 2012 at 11:28 pm
So I have this conservative friend, code named The Moderate Conservative, and she wrote a grumpy piece about how the GOP has gone bat shit insane. She has every right to be grumpy; if PETA took over the Democratic Party, I’d be pretty grumpy too. Those people are jackasses! But there’s just a few problems with her rant. First, she gives a short history of the racism of the Democratic Party and how Republicans were the ones that freed the slaves. She also gives some detail about how Democrats were responsible for Jim Crow laws and the like:
20 years later the Democrat parties of several southern states began to repeal the black right to vote. The direct result of Johnson’s closet-Democrat politics.
Here we are over a hundred years later and the parties have switched roles. Now the Republicans are the conservatives and the Democrats are the liberals.
And she is correct. Sort of. But it was more than that. There a great number of hard core racists in the Democratic Party. They were known as the “Dixiecrats” and, WOOO!, they hated them some colored folks! So much so that when the Civil Rights Act was signed into law by Johnson, a Democrat, they were so disgusted they either switched to the GOP or just retired. The next crop of “good ol’ boys” came in as Republicans as Nixon ushered in the Southern Strategy, whose entire premise was using racial resentment to win white votes in the South. It is indisputably still in full effect today as the tsunami of race baiting that swamped the political landscape with the election of a black man to the White House is well documented. Thank goodness for the internet and video. It’s not that the Democratic Party “became” liberal, it’s that the racists left it and infected the GOP like a cancer.
The second problem I have is the use of the “both sides” meme:
But, there are still some major differences. The Republican party was not founded on extreme liberal principles. They were firm believers in change, but not change for the sake of change. They realized that you could change an entire nation, an entire culture by changing only one key thing. The original republicans were believers in Universal Sufferage, not communism. The current Democrats are leaning more and more towards communism, and some are even starting to say it straight out. The idea that those who have should be legally bound to pay for those who have not, no matter the reason those who are have nots have nothing.
30 years ago, liberal Democrats wanted an end to frivolous wars, a reduction of nukes, universal healthcare, a reduction in our military spending, equality for all and an appropriate level of taxes on the very very rich.

Did they fight for all of these things all the time? Not at all. Gay rights were not exactly a hot button issue in the 80s. But the basic mindset was there.
On the other hand, 30 years ago, the GOP was OK with raising taxes when necessary even after they cut them, sitting down with our sworn enemies to reduce tensions and avoid bloodshed was considered the height of diplomacy, abortion was mostly considered a non-issue except by the radical fringe, religion was nice but not too much in our politics, please, the John Birch Society had been thoroughly banished two decades earlier for being completely insane and drowning in conspiracy theories and reducing our nuclear arsenal was a worthy endeavor.
These days, no taxes can ever be raised for any reason whatsoever even as our Republican exploded deficit breaks one trillion dollars while corporations and the rich have more money then ever, negotiating with sworn enemies is seen as weakness while massive unnecessarily bloodshed is “patriotic,” not only is abortion the bane of modern society but so are all forms of contraception except maybe condoms, 3 of the 9 contenders for the GOP presidential nominee thought it would be just dandy if we run the country according to the Bible, a disturbing amount of Republicans are on the record as denying the science of evolution in favor Creationism, the John Birch Society, still insane and wearing tinfoil hats, hosted last years CPAC, Republicans are openly speaking about limiting voting rights and, oh yes, reducing our nuclear arsenal is now also a sign of weakness. Lastly, liberals are literally trying to destroy the country and hand it over to secular atheist communist Nazi Muslim terrorists that want to put you in FEMA re-education camps.
Yeaaaaahhh…I’m not seeing the equivalence here. The Democratic Party has gotten somewhat more liberal on certain issues while being yanked to the right by a conservative movement that has become freakishly radicalized. FFS, Obamacare is based on Mitt Romney’s Heritage Foundation spawned Romneycare! Yet, Obamacare is the most radical crazed communist idea ever! And that was a whole whopping THREE YEARS later.
Everything is relative. If you’re racing off a cliff at 100 mph while I’m standing on the cliff edge looking down, from your point of view I’m moving away from you at high speed. But only if you don’t realize that you’re the one that’s in a free fall.
A nice little chart of just how off the wall the GOP has gotten in the last three decades. Anyone seriously think that trend is going to end any time soon? Yeah, me neither. Notice how the Northern Democrats are pretty steady and it’s the Southern Democrats that become more liberal as they shake off the filth that was the Dixiecrats.
